Here are the Safest Dividends in the Market

(New York)

Dividends and buybacks have been looking very weak. Many buyback programs have been suspended and are likely to be under political pressure, while dividends are looking very at-risk because of likely poor earnings. So where to get some stable dividends? Barron’s ran a piece picking 40 of the safest dividends in the market. Here is a sampling: Nike, McDonald’s, Target, Home Depot, Coca-Cola, Caterpillar, Honeywell International.

FINSUM: This seems like a sound list. The only argument we might have is that Nike might not be able to maintain the hefty price increases consumers have stomached over the last five years.

Why It is a Good Time to Buy Nike

(New York)

Nike is one of the retail stocks that has had a very good year, and it may be about to get even better. Goldman Sachs has just jumped on the Nike bandwagon, saying that the stock is going to keep on rising. GS upgraded Nike to a Buy from Neutral and joined 25 other analysts who say the stock is a Buy. According the GS, their change in view is due to “Evidence of building pricing power, signs of operating leverage, accelerating shift to differentiated retail, sharply scaling app ecosystem, and a constructive global athletic growth backdrop”.

FINSUM: Brands are in a better position than retailers, and Nike is on the very good side of that better group.

In a great example of how Trump’s new tariffs on China will reverberate around the US economy, Nike and Adidas are panicking over the new Trump moves. The pair just led a consortium of 173 companies who penned an open letter to the President imploring him to stop the tariff move immediately. Nike and Adidas say the tariffs will be “catastrophic”. Clothing and footwear already endure some of the highest tariffs, so hiking them further will increase costs and create huge logistical complications. The letter summarized their view this way, saying they will be ”catastrophic for our customers, our companies, and the American economy as a whole”.

FINSUM: If you are a company that makes or imports a lot of your merchandise from China, this is going to be a very rough period. We expect the market will start to take this into account as the full impact of the trade war is digested.

A Great Beaten Down Stock

(Portland)

A lot of investors may be looking for stocks with good value at the moment. Stocks that are badly beaten up, but have good underlying businesses, can be prime buys during adverse market conditions. With that in mind, take a look at Nike. The sportswear giant has shed 16% this quarter and will release earnings later today. Investors’ skepticism will either be proven correct, or wrong. The thing is, the core business looks compelling. The company gave guidance in September that it was expecting currency-neutral revenue to grow 9%. One analyst summarized the stock this way, saying “buy Nike into earnings. Nike sales are gaining momentum and the company is gaining market share across channels and geographies.”

FINSUM: Nike has done an admirable job catching up to rivals recently, as well as in passing on rising costs to consumers. Our instinct is that this is a good buy.

Retail Stocks with Room to Run

(New York)

Retail stocks have come back in a big way since their slump in 2017. The whole sector seems to be having a revival in investors’ minds, but challenges remain. Rising costs pressures, tariff complications, and a looming backlog of inventory all look bleak. Consumer spending this Christmas may also be subdued. With valuations high again, there are still some great undervalued names, according to Barron’s. For instance, take a look at Nike, Tiffany, and Amazon.

FINSUM: We hardly think Amazon is a retail stock with room to run. That said, Nike and Tiffany are much more interesting as value picks.
