Goldman Says Stocks Have No Magic Bullet

(New York)

Corporate earnings are doing well and are forecasted to keep rising. Alongside those improvements in operating performance, one would expect stocks would likely keep rising. Not so fast, says Goldman Sachs, who says that earnings improvements will likely do little for stock prices. David Kostin, the firm’s chief US equity strategist, says that earnings’ influence on prices will be moderated by a number of factors. “The appreciation potential will be constrained by tightening monetary policy, a flattening yield curve, rising trade tensions, and the upcoming mid-term Congressional elections.”

FINSUM: In other words, stock market investors are dealing with much more than operating performance. We think the market will discount earnings even more than expected because a lot of the gains are being driven by the tax policy change, making the improvement temporary in nature.

Goldman is Set for Good Earnings

(New York)

If you are looking for a sign of how bank earnings might be doing, look no further than Goldman Sachs. Goldman has struggled over the last several quarters as its trading business has failed to generate much revenue because of the broad lack of volatility over the last couple of years. However, in a divergence from the norm, this quarter is supposed to be very strong because of the volatility that has hit markets. One of the big x-factors in the earnings will be how Goldman’s proprietary investments perform.

FINSUM: If Goldman does well it will bode well for the rest of the banks, especially because other trading divisions will likely see a pick up too.

Goldman Sachs Forging Ahead with Acquisition

(New York)

Goldman Sachs seems very committed to expanding its business. Not only is the bank trying to make a bigger push into wealth management, but it also also reportedly downsizing its trading unit and putting more resources into its consumer finance business. It now offers consumer savings products, and last week, made an acquisition to grow revenue in its consumer business. The bank bought consumer finance app Clarity Money, whose CEO is Adam Dell, younger brother of Michael Dell. The app helps consumers lower their bills and suggest ways to help their budgets and then keeps a cut of the savings.

FINSUM: To us it is quite amazing how Goldman is proactively shedding its elite image to become more broadly consumer focused. We wonder how it will affect its business in the long run.

Goldman’s Big New Business?

(New York)

Goldman Sachs has been pushing into a lot of new business lines over the last few years—consumer lending being the principal one, as well as further into wealth management. However, the company is in the midst of launching yet another—business banking. The bank is working on a suite of tools for large businesses to use, such as deposit accounts, cash management tools etc. The move is seen by some as an odd one, as such services are dominated by huge-balance sheet integrated banks, such as JP Morgan and Citi.

FINSUM: This could become a good business, but it is not clear that Goldman has any strategic advantage to gain market share.

Goldman Advisors are Jumping Ship

(New York)

Goldman Sachs has been working hard to build up its advisor business. While the firm already has very strong revenue per advisor, it is trying to build up its advisor base and boost its securities lending business. However, it has a problem—many of it advisors are jumping ship. Goldman used to be a place where advisors stuck around for years, but in the last 12 months no less than five big, high quality teams have left the firm. Two have gone to other wirehouses, three became independent. Those in the industry say more are likely to leave.

FINSUM: It looks like Goldman is experiencing the same issues as everyone else.
