More Warning Signs on the Economy

(New York)

The topic of the next recession has faded a bit from the mainstream media discussion over the last month, and understandably so. Not only has the market jumped, but the Fed seems to have completely backed off the rates gas pedal. That said, we are keeping an eye on primary and secondary data on the economy to see what the future may hold. Here is some data that is worrying us a bit: global freight shipping rates are tumbling. China’s weak spending and a global slowing of growth has sent shipping rates way down, a sign of excess supply and demand weakness across the world.

FINSUM: This kind of info, along with metals demand etc, are great leading indicators of what might happen in the economy. Add this to the warning signs.

Stocks are Flashing a Lot of Warning Signs

(New York)

The bond market saw ten-year yields move higher yesterday, up over 3% in fact. Despite the rise, stock markets eked out a small gain. Some would consider this a positive sign. However, Barron’s is arguing the opposite, contending that the lack of market breadth lately may indicate that a recession is on the way.

FINSUM: We favor market breadth as a good indicator of sentiment. When investors think things are good, all sectors tend to rise, when they feel bearish, those gains tend to be isolated. Notice how the Nasdaq has risen considerably this year while other markets are flat. This is a good indication of how investors are feeling.

Big Warning Signs Flashing for Stocks

(New York)

The stock market is very highly priced at the moment and many think we are in the middle of a “melt up”. With that in mind, many are constantly on the lookout for warning signs that the market might be ready to tumble. Well, some are appearing. The big warning sign is that credit spreads are widening and implied volatility is picking up. It is very unusual for this to occur during a rally, as it usually happens during corrections. This warning comes on top of other red flags, such as stretched investor sentiment, and very positive earnings revisions.

FINSUM: The bond market has long been known for leading the stock market, and credit spreads are one of the indicators we tend to take very seriously. Definitely something to pay attention to.
