The Best Undervalued REITs

(New York)

REITs are a tough area to invest in right now. On the one hand they look vulnerable because of the rising rate environment, but they have also surged recently at the same time as offering enticing dividends for investors. The answer, then, may be to find undervalued REITs, and Barron’s has put out an article helping to do just that. Here are some REITs the publication highlights: Invitation Homes, Front Yard Residential, Digital Realty Trust, InterXion Holding, LaSalle Hotel Properties, and Extended Stay America.

FINSUM: REITs tend to have very good dividends, but tend to suffer during periods of rising rates because of this. They seem like a good source of income right now, but need to be chosen very carefully.

These Stocks are Both Growth and Value

(New York)

Are you a growth investor or value investor? This has long been a bifurcating question, and has taken on increased importance in the last decade, as the former strategy has outperformed the latter by a wide margin. However, there are some occasions where a stock can be both. Using a simple screen, here are some companies priced like value stocks, but with the core expansion characteristics of growth companies. These include: Micron Technology, Energen Corp., Callon Petroleum, Cal-Maine Foods, Valero Energy, TimkenSteel Corp, and TRI Pointe Group.

FINSUM: Many of these might not be familiar names, but the selection is an interesting methodology and we think they are worth a look.

Value Stock Shine as S&P 500 Slips

(New York)

The S&P 500 and most major indexes have been fairing poorly very recently. However, that presents a major opportunity, says Morgan Stanley strategist Michael Wilson. Morgan Stanley says that as the market declines, now is a great time to shift out of growth stocks and into value. Growth stocks’ forward earnings multiples versus value stocks do not merit further outperformance, so its seems likely that value stocks may start to shine. Energy, industrials, and financials value stocks seem a smart choice, says MS.

FINSUM: This makes sense to us. As economic growth starts to taper, the big valuation gap between growth and value stocks seems likely to fade, meaning the latter should outperform. But then again, that would go against a decade of momentum, so it is a dicey bet at best.

5 Solid Value Stocks That Look Like a Bargain

(New York)

While value investing is one of the most famous forms of the discipline, it has been outshined over the last several years by growth and momentum strategies. Subsequently, there has been much less coverage of it. Well, Barron’s has just put out a piece picking what it says are five good value stocks that look inexpensive in this very rich market. The names discussed in the piece include Magellan Midstream Partners, SunTrust Banks, Kansas City Southern, Thor Industries, and Owens Corning.

FINSUM: This piece offers quite a mix of sectors and companies. Definitely some names to check out here.
