Drone Delivery is Finally Happening

(San Francisco)

It has been several years in the making, but drone delivery appears as though it is about to become a reality. Google has just had its drone delivery project approved by the FAA, the first such approval. The caveat is that the approval is only for an area in rural Virginia. But still, it is a breakthrough for the growing and fiercely competitive drone industry. Amazon and others are vying for FAA approval as companies want to be the go-to provider of nation-wide drone delivery. The division of Alphabet running the drone program is called Wing Aviation.

FINSUM: UPS, FedEx, and USPS drivers should be nervous about this, but it is a major breakthrough that has been a long-time coming.

Amazon to Start Car Deliveries

(Seattle)

Amazon is starting a new service. For the last year, the company has been trying to convince consumers that letting the company’s delivery people in their homes via a special service was a good idea. Now Amazon is taking that one step further with the launch of a program to deliver packages to customers’ cars. Like the home deliveries, and broadly under the same program, named Amazon Key, Amazon’s delivery people will deliver packages to cars parked in publicly available areas. The car will be unlocked by an OnStar (or similar) service and relocked after the delivery is completed.

FINSUM: We think this could be a very convenient feature for many people and may be an enticement to get more consumers to sign up.

How Amazon Will Become a UPS or FedEx

(Seattle)

Last week Amazon made big news as it became clear that the company had plans to launch its own full scale delivery network both for its own shipments and for any retailer. The big players in the space are FedEx and UPS, and Amazon sees an opportunity to grab market share. However, the Wall Street Journal has published a “sense check” type of article showing that it would take a massive amount of investment and many years to gain the delivery scale to truly compete with UPS and FedEx. The WSJ reports that “FedEx has roughly 650 aircraft, 150,000 trucks, 400,000 employees and 4,800 operating facilities globally to handle about 12 million shipments a day”. Amazon has just a tiny fraction of that sort of infrastructure.

FINSUM: It is going to take Amazon several years, and a lot of patience from investors, to get in a position to compete with UPS and FedEx. We would never count the company out, but it is a distant goal.
