Mueller to Testify Before House
(Washington)
The Democrats are finally getting their time with Robert Mueller this week. Mueller is set to testify for a full five hours before the House Judiciary Committee and House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday. Democrats are seen as likely to push him to give further details on his investigation, especially into obstruction of justice claims, while Republicans are expected to probe him on bias within the FBI.
FINSUM: Everyone seems to agree—it is hard to imagine anything happening at these hearings that would change anyone’s mind.
Democrats May Get Trump’s Tax Records
(Washington)
A US District Judge is allowing a lawsuit from Democrats against President Trump to proceed. The lawsuit is from Congressional Democrats and the green light they have received will allow them to begin collecting records from businesses owned by the president. The judge denied a request by the DOJ to pause the case in order for it to be reviewed by a higher court. “This case should have been dismissed. It presents important questions that warrant immediate appellate review and is another impractical attempt to disrupt and distract the president from his official duties”, said the DOJ. The department will now try a long-shot emergency plea to an appeals court in Washington.
FINSUM: This did not get covered much in the media, but it is an important development as this will bring the Democrats closer to getting all the records they want. The fight is escalating.
Trump is Getting a NY Tax Probe
(New York)
It has just been announced that New York state is opening a tax probe into the Trump family. The scope of the investigation will be extensive, digging into the president’s inheritance form decades ago. The investigation was prompted by an extensive article published by the New York Times which alleges fraud in Trump’s tax affairs. The NY state department of taxation said it was “vigorously pursuing all appropriate avenues of investigation”. The New York times alleges that Trump undertook “dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud”.
FINSUM: Here comes another potential legal headache for Trump.
Trump Counteroffers Mueller for Interview
(Washington)
After a long and quite public back and forth about the potential for an interview, are President Trump and Robert Mueller close to meeting? Trump’s team has apparently responded to Mueller’s request for interview with a counteroffer on the terms. The two parties have been in discussions since at least January. The basic core of the counteroffer is that Trump is happy to talk about collusion with Russia, but not about obstruction of justice. Though Rudy Giuliani, who is on Trump’s legal team, said they did leave the door open to possible questions on obstruction.
FINSUM: This seems like a positive development. It appears like it would be good for all sides to have this investigation finished once and for all, and a sit down with Trump could potentially resolve things.
Cohen Turns on Trump with Recording
(Washington)
Rumors of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen turning on the president have been stirring for weeks. Now it appears to have happened, as CNN has published a recording (which it says is from Cohen) of President Trump and Cohen discussing the “financing” of a payment to a former Playboy model. The conversation was apparently about buying the playmate’s story, a story which involved an alleged affair with Trump in 2006.
FINSUM: In our view this will likely just cause another minor firestorm. Trump doesn’t say anything really shocking or incriminating in the recording, so we don’t imagine this will have any significant impact.
