Goldman’s 31 Best Stocks for the Volatile Market

(New York)

The market has been highly topsy turvy lately. With no real direction, stocks have been swinging back and forth based on economic and COVID news from day to day. With this kind of market looking likely for the near term, Goldman laid out some of its best picks for this kind of environment. Speaking about the market generally, the bank said “Consensus expects 9% upside to the typical stock over the next 12 months and volatility should remain elevated through the rest of the year, suggesting low risk-adjusted returns in the coming months.” Its stock picks included: Merck, Verizon, Philip Morris, General Motors, Comcast, Mondelez, and Coca-Cola.

FINSUM: A lot of old blue chips here whose earnings aren’t likely to be hurt too much by COVID.

The Best Cheap Blue Chip Stocks

(New York)

The market may be way up this year, but there are still some great values out there. The average P/E ratio of the S&P 500 is 16.7, yet 67 of the companies in it trade at below 10, triple the amount of five years ago. Here are a handful of blue chips that are very cheap, but have strong market positions, decent profitability, and nice growth positions: Delta Airlines, Bank of America, Kroger, homebuilder Lennar, and BorgWarner, a maker of car components.

FINSUM: These seem like great picks, but they also appear to be the victims of the long-term decline in value investing. Investors keep thinking value investing will bounce back, but it hasn’t.

The Dilemma for Income Investors

(New York)

Those seeking to buy income-focused investments have a dilemma on their hands right now. Is it safer to buy high-yielding blue chips like AT&T, or better to buy a diversified high yield fund? Barron’s tries to answer this question and gives a definitive opinion—the bond fund. While both may offer similar yields of between 5-6%, holding money in just one or a small handful of blue chips offers much more risk. Not only could dividends be cut, but underlying businesses could deteriorate. And without the benefit of diversification that a broad ETF offers, a portfolio could see heavy losses.

FINSUM: This is a good, basic article to share with any clients who ask why they are buying debt instead of just owning a few stocks.

Three Blue Chip Bargains

(New York)

While markets have been doing a little better of late, investors may be looking for safe stocks that could perform well. Well, if that is the case, look no further than three old-time consumer goods companies that look ripe for outperformance. Coca-cola, PepsiCo, and P&G all look set to thrive and are available at a bargain. On the back of a slew of industry factors, consumer goods stocks are down by over 12% this year. However, the three stocks mentioned are solid dividend producers and seem likely to provide strong earnings growth, making a 10% total return for the year look likely.

FINSUM: 4% dividend yields with good top-line revenue growth for rock solid stocks seems like a pretty attractive proposition to us.
