JP Morgan Says 40% Correction Looms

(New York)

Okay investors, hold on to your hats. A big name has just come down with a stern and gloomy warning for the markets. JP Morgan is saying that stocks may have a giant bear market. How big? Try a 40% correction, according to the bank’s co-president. Daniel Pinto, the bank’s co-president who oversees trading and investment banking, says that markets are bound for a big correction because of fears over rising interest rates and inflation. The bank thinks the market will see a two- to three-year downturn where prices will fall up to 40%.

FINSUM: This is a big correction that JP Morgan is calling for. We do think the market might go through a rough patch, but we don’t know if it is going to reach these kind of Financial Crisis era proportions.

Here is Amazon’s Next Home Run

(Seattle)

Amazon as a company has been nothing but an unmitigated success. But while the business on the whole has been stellar, there have been missteps, such as the venture into smartphones. But where will Amazon’s next big shot in the arm come from? Bloomberg says it is going to be in healthcare. The company is teaming up with JP Morgan and Berkshire Hathaway to make healthcare more affordable for their employees, and eventually all Americans. Bloomberg summarizes Amazon’s potential to transform healthcare best, saying “Amazon’s e-commerce operation could be used to send medication direct to patient’s homes, saving them trips to a pharmacy. Its cloud-computing division can store patient health-care records so they can be easily accessed by doctors anywhere. And its payments system could be used to automate payments with health-care providers.”

FINSUM: Say what you want from a returns perspective, but from a consumer perspective the US healthcare system is decidedly broken. Hopefully, this sort of initiative will eventually turn it around.

(New York)

Banks are soon to be reporting their fourth quarter earnings, and Barron’s has put out an article advising investors on which stocks to buy ahead of the release. JPMorgan will report first and its numbers will have big implications for the sector. The piece cites analysts and says that Wells Fargo, Zion’s Bank, and Suntrust Bank look likely to do well, while investors should be underweight Goldman Sachs, CIT Group, and US Bancorp.

FINSUM: The tax package is going to be an interesting part of bank earnings both this earnings season and next, as some banks may do unusual tax maneuvers.

Dimon’s Regrets Calling Bitcoin “Fraud”

(New York)

The comment heard round the world seems to have been eating JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon. Several months ago Dimon made the much publicized comment that Bitcoin was “fraud”. The CEO is one of the most respected on Wall Street and the comments have been the bane of the cryptocurrency for some time. However, speaking at a conference yesterday, Dimon said about his statements that “I regret making them”.

FINSUM: The funny part of about this new statement is that it was accompanied by several more veiled expressions of dislike for bitcoin, such as saying he is “not interested in the subject at all”.
